Fair point and something I thought about as well (as you hear this quite a bit as the strength of WhatsApp). One thing I didn’t include (as the post was getting bloated itself), but I think it unfortunately may have to be one of the major players doing this themselves (versus a startup or even a niche player — which, sadly, WhatsApp is in the US). So the “lite” versions of apps (which I know are intended for countries with data use restrictions) may be a first step. But really, I just want Google to redo Hangouts as Google Talk :)
