I agree with this but also believe that the best bands — meaning the ones with a shot of true longevity — have to reinvent themselves. It’s just that so few can cross this chasm and be popular twice (or more) with different sounds. (And you could certainly put The Beatles in that camp, despite their brevity as a band.) But if they can pull it off, they endure.
