It’s a good question. One I’m not sure the answer to. Obviously, they didn’t think they’d miss the holiday season — but that’s the risk you take pre-announcing. So I have to assume they felt some heat from Amazon’s Echo devices (and to a lesser extent, Google’s Home devices), and were hoping to blunt some of their momentum. But it didn’t seem to work, and ultimately backfired…
